Abstract

This research seeks to explore the position of linguistics between structure and function, through a cognitive journey that transcends the formal limits of language toward its pragmatic and cultural dimensions. Linguistics, which was initially confined to the structural study of language as emphasized by Saussure, has expanded to examine the roles and functions of language in shaping meaning and human communication, as developed by Jakobson and the functionalist school.

The study highlights the dynamic interaction between the structural levels of language (phonological, morphological, and syntactic) and its communicative functions (referential, expressive, and persuasive). This interaction reveals how language operates not merely as a formal system but as a cognitive and cultural tool. It also shows how modern approaches have moved beyond rigid structural analysis toward a broader perspective that links language to discourse, context, and the socio-cultural environment in which it operates.

Methodologically, the research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach combined with functionalist perspectives in order to clarify the functions of linguistics in light of the duality of structure and function. It concludes that linguistics is no longer a neutral science restricted to describing language phenomena; rather, it has become an intellectual instrument for understanding human beings and their relationship with the world.
