This study aims to examine the functions of linguistics in geography by analyzing the spatial distribution of languages and dialects in Libya and creating a linguistic map illustrating the relationship between geographic features and linguistic diversity. The research employed a descriptive-analytical field methodology, collecting data from fifteen regions representing Libya’s three main territories (East, West, South) through questionnaires, interviews, and audio recordings.
Preliminary results indicate that geographic factors, such as terrain, climate, and distance from urban centers, play a pivotal role in shaping Libyan dialectal landscapes and preserving linguistic distinctiveness in remote areas. Border regions exhibit greater dialectal diversity due to interaction with neighboring communities, while internal migration and media contribute to reducing dialectal differences between regions. The study recommends documenting and protecting local dialects within educational and cultural policies that consider Libya’s geographic and linguistic diversity.
