This research examines the systematic methodology employed by Sheikh Muhammad Ali al-Sabuni in citing classical Arabic poetry within his concise Quranic commentary, Safwat al-Tafasir (The Essence of Commentaries). It aims to reveal the mechanisms governing this employment of poetic evidence and the objectives al-Sabuni sought to achieve through it whether lexical-semantic, syntactic-structural, or rhetorical-stylistic purposes. It also seeks to evaluate this methodology in light of the general objectives of Quranic interpretation. This is based on a descriptive-analytical approach through the examination, classification, and analysis of poetic evidence. The study concludes that al-Sabuni’s use of poetic citations constituted a functional and selective employment aimed at serving the Quranic meaning and facilitating its understanding for the contemporary reader, with a clear predominance of the lexical-semantic linguistic purpose, which aligns with the simplifying nature he intended for his commentary.
